Janus |
| Janus is a Roman two-headed god, the opener of the year and
the patron of civil and social order. He is sometimes called Chaos
by the ancients for being a deity of old. Greece had no divinity like
him and he is the only one among the gods who beholds his back, being
the porter of the heavenly court and seeing at once both East and West.
He sits with the HORAE
at heaven's gate and regulates the comings and the goings. Like Hecate's
faces turned in three directions guard the crossroads when they divide
in three different ways, so do Janus, who do not lose time twisting his
neck. Father, by the Nymph Venilia, of the gifted singer Canens.
