11. terrace
: Å׶ó½º
-
One particular table
on the second floor boasts a spectacular view of the terrace
as well as Seoul's squat skyline through the six-meter tall facade of
glass.
-
Lara showered and
changed and had breakfast alone on the terrace
of the penthouse, a breakfast of grapefruit, cereal,
and green tea.

written by Sidney Sheldon]
12. extraterrestrial
: Áö±¸ ¹ÛÀÇ / ¿Ü°èÀÇ
- The existence of extraterrestrial
intelligence(¿Ü°èÀÇ »ý¸íü)
is surmised to be connected with the presence of water in any corner
of the ever-expanding pulsating universe, which runs towards an unknown
destination and the boundaries of which touch the contour of infinity. Is
there any water, in any of its physical states, in any planet out of
billions of heavenly bodies of the universe except Earth?
- Clearly, the most
compelling of her works is the ``Zero Gravity'' series that comprise of
enigmatic dots seemingly floating about a surface of monochrome ultramarine.
The dots are raised from the canvas, given form and texture so that they
appear to be asteroid fragments or other extraterrestrial
flotsam drifting in void of space.
- Bright, extraterrestrial
images(ÀÌÁöÀû À̹ÌÁö)
produced through the print art medium by Lee Sung-Ja, the fourth
senior artist to exhibit through invitation by the Seoul Arts Center, are
now on show at its exhibition hall.

the Extra-Terrestrial :¿Ü°èÀÎ/
E.T.(ÀÌƼ)
-
Although
he was just a loveable creature in a 1982 Hollywood blockbuster,
E.T.
the extra-terrestrial
gave a less threatening face to creatures from outer space.
Nearly
20 years after he hit the big screen, scientists have still not found
any real-life equivalent
but they believe conditions exist on
other planets to support life. |

14. topography
[topos < place + -graphy <
study of drawing] : ÁöÇüÇÐ
- Network topology,
users and software are constantly changing. There is no way to keep up.
15. Utopia
[u-, not + topos < place + -ia :
suffix]
:
¨ç
an imaginary island, represented by Sir Thomas More, in a work called Utopia
, as enjoying the greatest perfection in politics, laws, and the like
¨è
hence, any place or state of ideal perfection
- "Utopia" is
a Greek-based noun: u (not) + topos (place) +
ia (presumably, noun ending stem). The Greek stem "topos",
meaning "to put" or "place", is the root of the
contemporary English words "topology",
"topography", and "isotope". Therefore, pia is
not a separate and proper stem at all, and the word should be pronounced
"u-top-ia". The meaning "nonexistent
place" has evolved to denote a perfect
place. "Utopia" was actually coined
by Sir Thomas More (in
his book Utopia) and subsequently became widely used.
16. isotope
[iso-, same, equal + topos, place : at
the same place(ÔÒêÈ)]
: any of two or more atoms that have the same number of
protons but differ in the number of neutrons, or
that have the same atomic
number but different atomic weights/ µ¿À§¿ø¼Ò
- U235,
U238,
and U239
are three isotopes.
17. tectonics

in it / ±¸Á¶ÁöÁúÇÐ
18.
plate tectonics : the theory that the earth's surface consists of plates, or
large crustal slabs, whose constant motion accounts for continental
drift, mountain building, etc./ÆDZ¸Á¶·Ð

19.
geoid [geo-,
Áö±¸ÀÇ] : the earth
viewed as hypothetical ellipsoid with the surface represented as a mean
sea level / Áö¿ÀÀ̵å
20. geodesy
: the branch of applied
mathematics(ÀÀ¿ë¼öÇÐ)
concerned with measuring, or determining the shape of, the earth or a large part
of its surface, or with locating exactly points on its surface / Áö±¸°úÇÐ
- An international
group of scientists has pinpointed how many inches separate the Earth and
its moon - 15 billion, give or take an inch. Determining the moon's distance
to within 1 inch is an extraordinary accomplishment. These exquisite
measurements -- a kind of scientific slam-dunk -- are being used to test
Albert Einstein's theory of gravity. The international group of scientists
is based at the Institute for Astronomical and Physical Geodesy
in Munich, Germany.
- The Global
Positioning System (GPS) will get a foretaste of the Y2K
computer bug. GPS is a satellite-based navigation system administered
by the U.S. military, primarily for naval and airborne navigation. Due to
the way the system keeps time, the GPS system will have a date
"rollover" on Aug. 22, 1999, much like the so-called millennium
bug. Most modern GPS receivers have accounted for the rollover. But
not all. ¡°Certainly, there are old receivers out there that are
still in use,¡± says Richard Langley, professor of geodesy
and precision navigation at the University of New Brunswick. The current GPS
timekeeping system was inaugurated on Jan. 6, 1980. To keep time, the system
uses a 10-digit binary number, which means that the system runs out of
10-digit numbers once every 1,024 weeks. That will occur on 12:01 a.m. GMT
on Aug. 22. As with the Y2K issue, 100 percent compliance is unlikely.
What will happen with the remaining non-compliant receivers? If the time
stamp is incorrect, the device could be looking for the satellite at its
location back on Jan. 6, 1980.
